The EireScot Catalan Conexion bargain country holiday rating is an objective rating from OUR point of view within the classification type of the holiday accommodation. It is based on location, accessibility, decoration, level of accommodation, reception from the hosts and the general facilities, it has nothing to do with any other rating in whichever country, applied by the government, independent guides or holiday companies.

HOLIDAY ACCOMODATION
• THE MASIA (or Mas in Catalan) – Catalan Farmhouse
A Country Family Holiday Home or Bargain Spanish Holiday Farmhouse, generally quite isolated, usually with land or a large garden, sometimes with a basic family swimming pool/plunge pool (balsa) and some with a more luxurious version. Usually catering from 4 to 20 people for example. Fully equipped with living area, fully fitted kitchen, bathroom etc for personal use. The owners usually live separately but are available for help when needed.
Please take note that many of these holiday homes are actual working farms (crops not animals), you may find farm workers and equipment passing by your front door on their way to the fields - we find this adds to, rather than detracts from their charm, you will often find the owners bringing you fruit and vegetables from their own gardens or fields or inviting you to eat with them.
• ARI – Independent Rural Family Holiday Apartment–
Catering for groups of 2 – 8 or more, usually within a large country house or converted commercial building such as a mill or winery for example or a farm workers cottage. Found in both country and town locations offering facilities such as a kitchen, bathroom and living quarters for private use, whilst the gardens and pool area etc can be shared with the guests in other apartments or for totally private use.
There are generally a maximum of 4 bargain Spanish country holiday apartments to a building and they can be situated on a working farm, mill or winery for example.
• Terraced Holiday Cottages – (ARI'S)
As above but with the added originality of a 2 story bargain family holiday arrangement, with the entrance, kitchen and living accommodation at ground level connected by a staircase to the sleeping accommodation and bathroom/s.
• CASA DE PUEBLO – (A Village or Holiday Town House)
These lovely Spanish holiday homes can vary from a spectacular, 400 year-old, very important village or town residence which can sleep large numbers, to the smallest "bijou" house for 2/4 people. Quite often without a garden but compensated by a central position in the heart of the village or town with features such as terraces or interior patios to make your Catalan family holiday more enjoyable.
Many of these Catalonian rental holiday houses are quite beautifully restored retaining many original features, farm implements, bodegas (wine cellars) etc.
• Holiday CHALET OR Rental VILLA in Catalonia, Spain
A modern, family, holiday home with full self-catering facilities, with a garden and generally with a swimming pool, can be located in the countryside or on the outskirts of a village or town and sometimes in an urbanisation surrounded by similar properties.
N.B. These bargain Spanish holiday homes in Tarragona are usually too modern to comply with the government standards for true Rural Tourism, however we have selected them for their individual charm, excellent facilities, superb location or just for the friendly hosts (in some cases British)
• RURAL SPANISH HOLIDAY APARTMENTS
A more basic type of bargain family country holiday home, not actually complying with the strict rules for Rural Tourism in Catalonia but none the less very comfortable and within a Country holiday/ rural setting.

• CITY APARTMENTS (2 centre holiday)

CATERED HOLIDAY ACCOMODATION -
Exclusive country Catalonian holiday hotels or bargain Spanish holiday guest houses catering for every taste.
The same description as the self-catering properties:-
MASIA (Country House), CASA DE PUEBLO (Town House) etc. but where the owners are in residence, breakfast and either lunch or dinner is usually available but not always included in the price ( a more up-market form of B&B or H.B. Spanish family holiday).
Normally there are no self catering facilities and you would rent rooms or apartments within the house and share a general living, dining area etc. although the kitchen is sometimes available for guests' personal use. The following are the individual descriptions:-
• CASARURAL –
A country or village/ town family holiday house offering all of the above, can be independent within its own grounds or in the village itself - generally a maximum of 7 rooms, very individual in design and character and many offering a high level of luxury. The service is usually very homely and warm without the "chill" and "polish" of a larger hotel although hotel service is not usually given.
Breakfast is always available but not necessarily lunch or dinner, if other meals are available they generally consist of a set menu or the same food as the family eat on the day.
• HOTEL RURAL –
We will shortly be offering a selection of beautiful, intimate, rural Spanish holiday hotels ranging from the comfortable to the luxurious, all with less than 10 rooms. Facilities can vary from basic food available to several with top quality restaurants attached.
Generally all of these wonderful country family holiday hotels have gardens, some have pools and additional facilities or family activities included, such as games rooms, jacuzzi, sauna etc. Please do not expect full hotel service as these are not designed as such, you are usually in the owners' home and they will aim to please wherever possible to ensure your country hotel holiday is as enjoyable as possible.
• HOTELS IN RURAL SETTINGS –
Catalonian country house holiday hotels with character in historic or cultural settings of all sizes with varying facilities. Chosen for their individual charm and character in areas of cultural or historic interest.
• PENSION OR FONDA (Inn) -
A bargain, family holiday country or town house, very similar to our own B&B establishments, offering room and breakfast and dinner if requested in certain establishments. Again we only select Country, Spanish, family, holiday accommodation in buildings of character or within unique locations.
PRICING - please check carefully, some country, holiday hotels/ houses charge nothing for accomodation for babies and very young children, providing they are not using any of the facilities i.e extra bed/cot or food. Generally most places give a 50% discount to children under 10/12 on food but not always on accomodation
